A photo or video won't open or play on another device

A photo or video that works on your phone refuses to open on a computer, TV or another phone. The usual reason is its format — the container named by its extension, and the codec packed inside it — and understanding that difference tells you whether a conversion will help.

Does this sound familiar?

  • My computer says it can't open this photo from my phone
  • The TV says the video format is not supported
  • HEIC photos from an iPhone won't open on Windows
  • A video plays on my phone but not on my laptop

People also describe it as

  • heic won't open
  • video format not supported
  • hevc codec
  • photo won't open on pc
  • mp4 vs mov

Method for this problem

Understand a media file's format before converting it

A media file has two layers: the container — named by the extension, like .mp4 — and the codec, the way the picture and sound are packed inside it, like H.264. A device refuses a file when it cannot read one of those layers, and knowing which one it is saves pointless conversions.
