Chrome settings are messed up

Your homepage, search engine or startup pages changed without you choosing it — often because an app or extension changed them. Chrome has a built-in reset that restores these settings while keeping your bookmarks, history and passwords.

Does this sound familiar?

  • My Chrome homepage changed by itself
  • My searches go to a search engine I didn't choose
  • Chrome opens strange pages when it starts
  • An extension changed how Chrome behaves and I can't undo it

People also describe it as

  • reset chrome settings
  • chrome homepage changed by itself
  • restore chrome to default settings
  • chrome settings changed without my permission

Method for this problem

Reset Chrome settings to their defaults

Chrome's reset restores the settings that extensions or apps most often change without asking — the default search engine, homepage, startup and pinned tabs, content settings, and cookies and site data — and it disables all extensions. Your saved bookmarks, history and passwords are not deleted or changed.
