Find a downloaded file on an Android phone
Most downloads land in the Downloads folder of the Files app, but browsers keep their own download list and many apps keep their downloads inside themselves. This method checks each likely place in order.

Who it suits
- You downloaded a file on this phone and cannot find it now
- You tapped a download notification and lost track of the file
- You know roughly what the file was called or which app it came from
Who it doesn’t suit
- The file was downloaded on a different phone or computer — look there instead
- You already deleted the file; this method finds files, it does not recover deleted ones
Start guided mode or read all 6 steps below — guided mode is never mandatory.
Before you start
Preparation
- Try to remember roughly what the file was called, or where you got it from — a web page, Chrome, or a particular app such as a messaging app.
- Have the phone unlocked; nothing here needs a computer.
▲ Caution — possible effects
- Searching and opening only read information — no files are changed or deleted by this method.
- If you rename a download from Chrome's Downloads list, apps looking for the old name will not find it under that name anymore.
⬢ Stop if…
- Stop if the file you find asks to install an app (an .apk file) that you do not recognise. Do not open it; delete it instead, and only ever re-download from the original source.
- Stop if several files share the same name and you cannot tell which is right — compare their dates and sizes before opening any of them.

Steps
Open the Files app and go to Downloads
Open the Files app (called Files, My Files or Files by Google on many phones) and tap Downloads. Files saved from a browser usually land here, newest first.
Sort or scroll by date
Look through the files from the day you downloaded yours. If the list is long, use the app's sort option to show the newest files first.
Search by name
Tap the search icon in the Files app and type part of the file's name, or a word from it, such as 'invoice' or 'ticket'. Search looks across the phone's storage, not just the Downloads folder.
Check Chrome's own Downloads list
If you downloaded with Chrome, open Chrome, tap the three-dot menu, then Downloads. This list shows everything Chrome has downloaded on this phone, including downloads still in progress or paused — which explains some 'missing' files.
Check the app you downloaded it in
Files saved inside apps often stay inside those apps. If the file came through a messaging app, open the chat or the app's media and documents section; Google's help notes that music, movies and books are likewise found inside the app that downloaded them.
Open the file to confirm it is the right one
Tap the file. If it opens and shows what you expected, you have found it. From the Files app you can then share it or move it somewhere easier to reach.
How to check success
Finishing the steps is not the same as fixing the problem. You are done if these practical checks pass:
- Check: Can you see the file in the Files app, in Chrome's list, or in the app that downloaded it?
- Check: Does the file open and show the content you expected?
If it fails
- If the file appears in no list and search finds nothing, the download probably never completed. Go back to the original page or message and download it again, watch the progress until it finishes, and then look in Downloads straight away.
